Well paid rural internship jobs all over Australia

The 416 Internship Visa is valid for 12 months. This gives participants the chance to have a job in rural or outback Australia to extend and internationalise their skills and experience. They will see parts of this country, get off the tourist trail, live and work alongside Australians and get to know about the Australian way of life. They can travel and work for a whole year. There is a huge variety of work available to them in Australia, which it is impossible to arrange independently because of the Visa restrictions. 

All candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 30* when the visa is applied for and must meet all the requirements of the Department of Immigration for that class of visa 416. (*not yet had their 31st birthday).All applicants must have certificates of competence in English to at least level 4.5 IELTS or be certified by their agent or school / university principal that they speak English to a competent level.

Someone can qualify for an Internship Visa if he or she is from an ETA country:

  • Are recent graduates that hold relevant educational / training qualifications, supported by references for a job that can be done in a rural or outback area
  • Are current students who have completed at least half their course in a related area of study, and as part of their studies have to undertake practical work experience in a related task in a rural or outback area, supported by their College or University
  • Are from an agricultural background and have worked with animals on a professional basis for at least the last 2 years. This could include, but not limited to: sheep shearers, veterinary nurses and technicians, farriers, agricultural tourism and fish farming; horse breakers, artificial insemination specialists, sheep/ cattle dog trainers, supported by written references, certificated, results or certification from qualified animal association representatives
  • Are from an agricultural or equine background and are fully competent in handling horses safely and possess practical experience in the daily care and maintenance of horses. Participants may also have skill in areas such as: working with racehorses or thoroughbred breeding, competing in polo, polocrosse, eventing, showing or endurance riding, supported by written reference, certificates and results.

Or if from a non-ETA country he or she has:

  • Are recent graduates that hold relevant educational / training qualifications, supported by a written reference, for any sort of work that can be done in rural and outback areas.This includes all trades.
  • Are current students who have completed at least half of their course of study and need practical experience in a rural or outback area
  • Are from an Agricultural background and have worked with animals on a professional basis for at least the last two years. This could include any form of agricultural work with sheep or cattle, crops or engines, diesel mechanics; it could also include shearers, veterinarians and nurses, agricultural tourism workers, agronomists, fish farm, olive and grape farms or any related agricultural industries -supported by references or certificates.
  • Are from an agricultural or equine background and are fully competent in handling horses safely and possess practical experience in the daily care and maintenance of horses. Participants may also have skills in areas such as working with racehorses or thoroughbred breeding, competing in polo, polocrosse, eventing, showing or endurance riding; supported by references, certificates and results.
They do NOT qualify if:
  1. They are unemployed and are not undergoing any studying or training at the time of application.
  2. They are seeking the Internships as a quasi-Working Holiday Visa.
  3. They are eligible for some other class of Visa, i.e. Working Holiday, Work and Holiday.
  4. They have no financial or family ties that would provide sufficient inducement for them to return to their home country at the end of their stay in Australia.
  5. They have no current skills relating to the relevant industry, have not worked in the industry or studied towards relevant qualifications in the past three years.
  6. They are undertaking a non-related study and intend to return to that study or career on return to their home country.
  7. They have established a career in a non-related area and intend to return to that career in their home country.
  8. They meet the requirements of the Trainee (402) or Long Stay Business Visa (457).
  9. They have simply expressed a liking for Australia or animals.
  10. The following positions are excluded from the programme: au pair, nanny / child minding, housekeeping, harvesting fruit and vegetables or any multiple placements where unskilled labour is required.

Whilst on the training farm

You will ride horses and agricultural motorbikes, work with cattle, drive and operate tractors, work with fencing and learn chain sawing skills, and have some basic vehicle maintenance tuition. Farm and outback safety skills are also taught as this is the primary focus of our introductory course.

There are three main training farms where you spend most of the week you are here. You receive full board, accommodation and training on the farm, you do not need to travel to another farm each day.

Joining Procedure

  1. Complete an application form and outline CV.
  2. Our local company will assess the application and email acceptance or advise rejection.
  3. Send the completed Visa application to us with the government visa application fee (AU$ 315) and the deposit of AU$ 1,500 – this includes the returnable Bond of AU$ 1,000, (by credit card) with a passport size photograph of the applicant, and one of the applicant performing a relevant agricultural / work activity and the picture page from your passport.
  4. Get medical and accident health insurance.
  5. Send copies of all the documents listed as required by email.
  6. Our local company will attach the Invitation Letter and forward to the Department of Immigration. If the visa is denied despite us having recommended acceptance the deposit will be returned less the costs unless there are mitigating circumstances. The Bond would be returned in this instance.
  7. Please notify us as soon as the Department of Immigration approves the application.
  8. Pay the balance of the programme fee on the Granting of the Visa and give us the flight timings. It is requested that everyone gets a flight that lands at Brisbane International Airport, International Terminal between 6.00 and 10.00 am on a Thursday morning.

The Health insurance document, the birth certificate and the picture page from the passport have to be certified as true copies. This is important.

Andorra, Austria, Brunei, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Monaco, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Republic of San Marino, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland and Vatican City – plus all those that can get 417 and 462 visas.

Non ETA countries are all the rest of the world – but only the following countries may apply for all rural types of work:

Argentina, Botswana, Brazil, Jamaica, Lesotho, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, Namibia, Nepal, South Africa, Swaziland, Ukraine, Uruguay, Zambia and Zimbabwe – plus those that can get 417 and 462 visas. China and the Philippines may apply for a small number of places each year for agricultural graduates only and other countries not listed may apply for agricultural candidates in special circumstances.
